Everything I Needed to Know, I Learned by Volunteering
By Yvonne Thomas

Begin helping others early in your life, but it is never too late to start

If one assignment doesn’t work out, try something else

People are valuable, preserve them

People bruise easily, be empathetic in your relationships

Volunteering should be a life-long commitment, nurture it, strengthen it, feed it, expand it and make changes in it

Life is doing things for others, enjoy it and thank them for the opportunity to serve, learn and grow

Proficiency in volunteering takes time — be patient

And while you are waiting, take the time to tell others how much you appreciate their volunteer efforts

Sometimes change is painful, but it is a necessary part of maturing

Often the tiniest gesture means the most, don’t under estimate the value you add to another person’s life

To everything there is a beginning and an end, know what zone you’re in

Dream big and take risks, but don’t let ambition obscure your compassion

Do what you love; your excitement will sustain you in stressful times

You reap what you sow — but there will always be surprises along the way!
